The William T. Grant Foundation announces the release of a new resource for mentors, Pay It Forward: Guidance for Mentoring Junior Scholars, which was jointly developed by the Forum for Youth Investment and the Foundation. This mentoring guide features knowledge gleaned from our work with current and former William T. Grant Foundation Scholars and their mentees, as well as a review of selected literature.
Most scholars are expected to mentor junior colleagues, but they are provided with few supports and resources to become strong mentors. This guide addresses common questions and dilemmas mentors face and identifies strategies and resources for developing mentoring skills. It is organized around four themes: (1) building and maintaining mentoring relationships, (2) mentoring across difference, (3) supporting career development, and (4) managing conflict within mentoring relationships.
“We at the Foundation believe effective mentoring is a critical component of training the next generation of high-quality researchers and hope this guide can be used to help facilitate good mentoring relationships,” said Vivian Tseng, senior program officer the William T. Grant Foundation and an author of the guide.
