How do adolescents and young adults develop attitudes and beliefs about marriage and parenthood and how do these concepts affect their future relationship status and fertility? The researcher will examine the sociocultural conception of marriage and fertility by combining qualitative and quantitative analysis to understand the roles of marriage and fertility in the lives of adolescents and young adults. The project will focus on identifying how socioeconomic status, peer groups, and school climate influence adolescent’s views toward marriage and fertility and understanding how these views influence the transition to marriage and parenthood. The researcher will also analyze how low-income adolescents and young adults perceive family formation decisions, explore the economic and relational expectations associated with marriage and parenthood, and evaluate how economic circumstances during the transition to first marriage and first-time parenthood for young adults have changed over time.
